Special Guide 3

Spas & Hot Tubs

Small volume, hot water, and heavy use mean different targets and more frequent testing than a pool.

Hot tub targets (CDC guidance)

Free chlorine
3–10 ppm

If you use chlorine.

Bromine
4–8 ppm

If you use bromine.

pH
7.2–7.8
Temperature
Max 104°F

Lower for children and during pregnancy — ask a doctor.

Never reuse pool doses

  • A hot tub holds a few hundred gallons. A pool dose would be dangerously strong.
  • Use products labeled for spas, and find your spa's volume in the owner's manual.
  • Test at least twice a week, and before each use if the tub is used heavily.

Recovery & routine

  1. 1Test sanitizer and pH. Adjust pH first, then sanitizer, using spa product labels and your spa's volume.
  2. 2Run the jets/circulation while treating so product mixes. Leave the cover open while adding chemicals if the label says so.
  3. 3Clean the filter: remove and rinse the cartridge per the spa manual (often every 2–4 weeks with regular use). Deep-clean or replace on the manufacturer's schedule.
  4. 4Drain and refill when the manufacturer recommends, or when water stays cloudy, foamy, or smells even with good numbers. Turn heater power off before draining.
  5. 5After refill, rebalance and sanitize before use.

Clean spa water still needs numbers in range. Demonstration image.
Keep the cover locked when not in use. Don't use a hot tub alone if you feel unwell, and keep sessions short. Never use if sanitizer can't be measured.
