Step 7

Test Again and Confirm the Result

Water can look crystal clear and still be unsafe, or still have chlorine levels too high for swimming. Only open the pool when your test numbers say so — not because it looks good or because 24 hours passed.

What You'll Need

  • Test kit
  • Your notes from Step 2

What To Do

  1. 1Stand at the deep end. You should clearly see the main drain on the floor.
  2. 2Test free chlorine. It should be within your product label's range for swimming (CDC: at least 1 ppm in pools).
  3. 3Test pH: 7.2–7.8.
  4. 4Check filter pressure and that return jets push water normally.
  5. 5Remove any remaining debris from the floor and baskets.
  6. 6Only allow swimming when all numbers are in range. If chlorine is still very high from treatment, wait and retest.

What To Check

Crystal-clear water does not automatically mean safe water. Don't open the pool based on looks or because 24 hours passed — only when your test results are in range.
